The Joys of Owning a Conservatory

A conservatory, along with quality double glazing, is the one thing that you can add to your home to improve your living experience and living space more than any other home improvement. A conservatory remains at the pinnacle of home improvement projects, because it not only creates more space, it creates a bright, light and airy space where you can enjoy the great outdoors, from inside your own home.

Should you be considering having a conservatory installed, but you aren't entirely sure about the benefits it will add to your property, read on!

Increase the value of your property with a conservatory

It has been estimated that a conservatory could increase your property's value by as much as five percent, which could be more than £15,000. Now that in itself is a good reason to consider a conservatory.

Having a conservatory fitted to your existing property could attract potential buyers to your home, as they allow you to view your garden and feel a connection to the outside, while being protected from the wind and weather.

A conservatory satisfies our need for extra light

Many people consider some sort of a covered area in their garden. A place where they can enjoy the great outdoors, in the privacy of their own garden. These covered areas may take the shape of a pergola type construction. If you have a patio at your home, a pergola or canopy could be the ideal solution to provide an extension.

A pergola or canopy can provide a covered exterior to your home, either over your front door, the area of your driveway where you park your car or over your patio area to create an open, fresh, yet covered outdoor area. However, a pergola, although covered, is open at the sides, making is draughty or just downright cold on a chilly day. You'll certainly benefit from extra fresh air and the sights and sounds of your garden, but you won't be very comfortable or warm doing it.

A conservatory on the other hand offers all the benefits of a pergola cover, but with the added insulation, security and comfort of a quality garden room, so you can enjoy the outdoors, inside.

A conservatory links your home to your garden

A conservatory acts as a connection between your home and your garden. With panoramic views of the outside world, you get to enjoy all the benefits of being outside, just with the protection from the weather.

Unlike the rest of your house, a conservatory will be made predominantly out of glass that is expertly fitted into a wooden, uPVC or metal frame.

A conservatory is less of a planning headache

Planning permission for extensions to a property can be an absolute headache. The process can be lengthy and complex, with a neighbour objecting and scuppering your plans at the eleventh hour. A conservatory tends to be far more straightforward than an extension, as an extension needs to be identical to the rest of your home and are a permanent addition to the property. Many conservatories can be removed and even taken with you to a different property should you wish.

A conservatory offers you an extra room

Modern conservatories are so well built and protected from the outside elements that they can even be used as an extra bedroom, a lounge or dining area or even as a kitchen. Because a conservatory is most often added to the rear of properties, and a lot of houses have their kitchens to the rear, the two can be combined. So if you've ever dreamed of having a cooking island, a nice bright breakfast bar, or just extra room to manoeuvre, a conservatory can help you to achieve these dreams.

Clearly, a conservatory that will form part or all of a kitchen, will require certain utilities such as water or gas, so a reputable tradesperson should be appointed for such work.

A conservatory can be a lot cheaper than an extension

Another great reason to opt for a conservatory over an extension is the initial cost of the project. When one considers that even a small extension could set you back as much as £30,000, a conservatory could cost as little as £3,000. Think about saving all that money, but still being able to enjoy the benefits of an extra room in your house.

A conservatory is bound to be the cheaper option because conservatories are made out of fewer materials than extensions, and are generally an attachment to your home rather than a permanent addition to the building. Remember, a conservatory can be removed without damaging the fabric of the existing property.

Conservatories offer you choice

Conservatories come in a wide range of configurations, sizes and styles. Some may have floor to ceiling glass, whereas others may have a brick built base. Some of the different styles can complement the rest of your property too. You can have P-shaped, T-shaped, Lean to or Gable shapes. With Edwardian or Victorian styling to suit.

Conservatories offer the perfect ambience

Conservatories give a virtually unlimited amount of natural light and uninterrupted views to your garden. This abundance of light is why so many people choose to have a conservatory fitted. Conservatories are fantastic places to unwind and relax and they frequently become the favourite room in the house. Many people who intended the conservatory to be an occasional summer room, now use it all year round.

A good quality conservatory can also conserve heat in the winter and keep nice and cool during the summer. Fortunately, the insulation that comes as standard for many modern conservatories now makes this a real possibility, which is why they are attractive in both the winter and the summer. The old single glazed conservatories from the past were just glorified green houses that were roasting in summer and freezing cold in winter. They were also a nightmare for running in condensation.

Modern conservatories are secure

Some years ago, the conservatory presented a rather weak point in the security of your home. The materials were rather flimsy and cheaply made and the locking mechanisms were of a similar quality. Fortunately, the modern conservatory is a different animal altogether!

The materials are robust and well made, with locking mechanisms that would be used throughout the rest of the property. Multi locking points on doors and windows, with double glazed units make the conservatory of today literally, as safe as houses.

The more reputable conservatory companies also offer good guarantees that can sometimes last up to around the ten year mark. This is great because if there are any manufacturing or fitting issues that should arise, you will be protected.

So, with quality materials and superb security features, now is the perfect time to start enjoying the great outdoors from the warmth and comfort of your new conservatory.

Double Glazing and the Environment

A few years ago, we started to see and hear reports about adverse effects on the environment owing to our overuse of certain fuels and CFC propellants in aerosols. Many either took little or no notice of the reports or put them down to scaremongering, whereas others would simply mock those who predicted any unprecedented climate changes. Fortunately, today we are more receptive to the changes as we are witnessing them happening for ourselves.

Flush Casement Windows in Conservation Areas

Replacing windows in a conservation area could land you in trouble with the authorities, particularly if you change the overall look of the building. Windows are more than a means of looking out at the scenery and keeping the rain and wind out in these areas.
